Francisco's article

Hi everybody. I will write an article about the origin of mitochondria and how their genome has evolved over the time. I'm interested in this topic because I've been working with mitochondria for a long time. Mitochondrion is an organelle that can be found in almost all eukaryotic cells (like mammalian cells). It is called the powerhouse of the cell because it produces most of the energy that cells need to live. However, almost 1 billions years ago, the mitochondrion was a free-living organism that was eaten by another unicellular organism and established a relationship where both parts got some advantages, what we call a symbiosis. I will describe the most important theories that explain the origin of mitochondria, the identity of the ancient organism that participated in the symbiosis, and finally what happened with the genetic information that the mitochondrion’s ancestor possessed.

Jairo´s essay

Hello everyone!! My article it´s going to be about what I am doing for my thesis work, this concerns with analytical chemistry and it is about selective separation of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, this are carcinogenic pollutants that are found on the ambient air, the work is focused on the separations of this compounds from a complex environmental matrix using solid phase extraction for its subsequent analysis with gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, for me it is an interesting topic because is related to what I would like to do ahead as a job or in my master degree.

Brenda's Essay

I'm going to write about "Mexican Women in Art", specially I will develop the period in XIX century when women couldn't be part of the "Academia de San Carlos". I think it's interesting to know the process that female had to live in order to be accepted in a discipline in wich men were the only one who could develop it.
I choose that subjet because this historical period is part of the age known as "Romanticism" and I have been interested in that topic for a long time, so I will present an introduction, a cultural context (in order to understand that age), the subjet develop and finally a conclussion.

Efratah's essay

The subject of my research paper is about a type of distillation which generally uses water steam to separate essential oils from solids. The research paper will contain a general background about distillation, the process analysis of this method, the necessary materials, the results of the experiment, the analysis of the results and conclusions.

Isidro´s essay

I'll talk about materials that are used to capture cabon dioxide.

As we now, climate change is one of the most worryng mundial problems. So, materials science has made its aportation during some years to developing new materials which have the capability to capture CO2. Some have more advantages than others in propierties.
In this essay, Global warming is described with its consequences and some solution alternatives. It's explained how materials science have made developments to asume this problem; polymers, ceramics, composites are described with some ways to CO2 is captured.

Also, perspectives and future against CO2 are explained.

It's a very interesting topic for me besides the environmental aspect, for the development and resarch in materials science.

Mily´s Essay

The topic of my reseach paper is "Flow of a Generalized Second Grade Fluid due an oscillating plate". It is about how a specific type of fluid (Second Grade Fluid) moves due the movement of a plate that supports the fuid. Basically, the idea is to give a process analysis about how t o obtain a mathematical expression that describes a physical phenomena (Second Grade Fluid's flow).

Most of the fluids that people know are called Newtonian Fluids, such air and water, they have a well-known behaivor and they have been studied for many years. However, there are other type of fluids, with different features, that have been gaining importance due their applications, such polymers, gels, emulsions, etc. The Second Grade fluid (SGF) could be used to describe the behavior of some polymers (often called viscoelastic fluids); however, that model has some restrictions for describing properly certain flows. In order to extend the applications of SGF model, there are some authors that have developed techniques to "Generalize" the model (improve its reults). One of those techniques is to modify the equation by replacing a derivative of an integer order by a Fractional Derivative (from Fractional Calculus, a specif area of Mathematics).

Lourdes's essay

Hi!

I'm going to take advantage of this exercise, because I'm going to write what will possibly be my first article, or a part of it.
And it will be deal with I'm actually working, I'm going to make up the results, but I will try that they are more or less what I want to find with the early stage of my doctorated.

My research paper will exactly deal with the process of analysis terrain and geomorpholical mapping in the Teotihuacan Valley. I will talk about what is done yet about it, and what is my justification of doing this kind of research.

I will explain the method that I'm using, ITC method, and what is the methodology of doing a photo-interpretation with the goal of obtaining a geomorphological map of the valley. It will include de description of every unit and also the system of the landscape. I will try to relate with two fields works that I have already done in the zone, about profile's description and stratigraphics columns in specific points, and their laboratory analysis.
In my discussion I will write about what would be expected to find in this zone in relation with another factors like vegetation, climate o topography. and if the obtained information is coherent with the results.

And in my conclusion I want to show my geomorphological map, with the possible points of further study in the future.
Valeria's article

Title is going to be: "The use of torpor in Myotis vivesi".
I'll start with and abstract and then I'm going to write an introduction where I want to explain what torpor means and the importance of this strategy for endothermic mammals, objectives, hypothesis and justification. For the body I´m going to describe the material I had used in the field, the methods and establish some concepts that are going to be important in order to understand the rest of the article. For the results I´ll use some tables and graphics to explain what I have already obtained. Finally I'll try to discuss the results and give a conclusion.

karina's essay

For the research paper I'm plannig to talk about how an extra activity ( a sport or a cultural one) can help children to develop certain skills they don't acquire at school, and how those activities contribute in their vocacional training. I think I would talk about specifacally about dance because otherwise could be so wide.
If I had enough time I would like to make a survey and apply it to my students in order to confirm my thesis, and also because there is no much information about it.

Uriel's essay

I will write about the discrimination to AIDS people. For example I will talk about some travel restrictions to those patients. Moreover, In my essay I will talk about somo legal aspects about people suffering that disease. For example some penalties which are regulated in some countries around the world. Besides I will talk about how much the law has helped those needed people.

Chucho's essey

For the research papper we are going to write I am thinking in a topic related with the conservation and restauration of ancient buldings in Mexico. I am not thinking in explainig what about with restauration and how the specialists, such as the architects, art historians, historians, etc., work on it. I would like to make some reflexions about how good is to restaure or conservte ancient buildings such as colonial churches, prehispanic structures, palaces, among others. It is necessary to state an historical context and see what happens with the revaluation of the old constructions, called the national patrimony, which started since the last decades of the 19th century. There are several positions about this complex situation among many authors. Some thinks the restaurations affects the image of the ancient monuments and others want to preserve them with different purposes, for example, to impede their destruction, and in the other side to use them like a bussiness. I would like to check some of them and try to see some examples of some sites chich are very common and famous in Mexico and in the world, such as Palenque, Chiapas.

It is true that we have liberty to express our ideas, but it is real too that our rights finish when begin the rest peoples´s rights. So is very important that we do not abuse of our liberty because in that case we can affect the juridical sphere of the people aroud us. Unfortunately that eccentrinc person forgot that religion always have been a very important part in all societies around the world because the humanity, since many centuries ago, have believed in a Superior Entity, which was named God, and have searched the form to comunicate and establish connections whith He, so the religion was created by the humans. I think that Alex Stewart will have many difficulties and criticisms because the real problem is not his ideas or opinions, the bad action in opposition to society in general is that he did not respect the things, in this case The Bible and The Koran, that are sacred by some groups of people like Catholics and Muslims.

How to tell your little sister or brother that the family's pet has died

By Efratah García Vega

When you are facing a tough and dramatic situation like the death of the family’s most beloved pet, it would be helpful to keep the following tips in mind.

* First, get your little sister or brother prepared for the bad news. Take her/him to a nice place like an ice cream shop. In case the child asks for the reason why you are doing such admirable action, tell her/him, in a non hurting way, that he/she should be quiet and enjoy the moment because this would not happen very often.

* Now, buy her/his favourite ice cream.

* Then, sit down and enjoy your ice cream while you talk about what a typical kid talks about.

* If she/he wants more ice cream, buy it. CAUTION! Do not get out of pocket.

* When you have finished your dessert, go to a little park.

* Once you are there, begin playing with her/him.

* At the time you play together tell her/him everything in an extremely soft way.

* After that, try to console her/him saying that everything will be all right, that “Miguelito” (or whichever the name of the pet was) has gone to the beautiful and peaceful pet’s heaven and some other comforting phrases that come to your mind.

* In time, go to a pet shop, buy another pet... and get ready for the next event.

How to give a “successful” government report.

These days in Mexico, a strategy to give a government report is critical to survive in the middle of political revenges and close to election times. This is a basic guideline to avoid uncomfortable situations:

  1. The first thing that you need to avoid is the possibility to get an answer in national TV, just after finish the report, so look in the local constitution for some legal opportunity to just send a written report to the congress.
  2. Give an announcement on national TV that is not necessarily that you go personally to deliver your annual report.
  3. Some week before the deadline, spend some money for being present in all the mass media, try to make as many advertisements as you can, and show in them happy people. Don’t forget to say that everything is great and that the country is on the right track.
  4. Send your report to the evaluators with your personal secretary.
  5. Give a “message to the nation” the next day of the report’s delivery. You should give the presentation in an emblematic place, lets say, the national palace. You have to consider at least two important things: the presence of the mass media and invite to your principal friends.
  6. Remember to send additional security guards; you never know when disappointed people could become aggressive.
  7. You must be sure that your discourse include all the good points that have happened in the year, and that all the bad things are enough covered up, in that way it doesn’t sound too bad.
  8. Sometimes there are some events that are impossible to covered up, in that case, be sure to blame someone else. If it is necessary, you should seem the victim.
  9. At the end, of your performance, don’t forget to say that everything is ok, maybe after saying it many many many times, it becomes the reality.
  10. After the show, you should continue with the promotion of your good government on all the mass media for at least two weeks more, or as much as is necessary.

It is important to mention that if you follow these indications, you maybe cannot improve your performance as a president, but it seems like you do.

Queensland lawyer Alex Stewart smokes pages from the Koran and Bible

From:The Courier-Mail, AAP

September 13, 2010 1:04PM

A BRISBANE-based lawyer and atheist who videoed himself smoking what appeared to be joints made with pages from the Bible and the Koran expects to lose his job at a Queensland university.

In the video, posted on YouTube, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) staffer Alex Stewart compares cigarettes made with pages from the two holy texts. In the clip, titled "Bible or Koran - which burns best?" the professed atheist says burning religious books is no big deal and people need to get over it.

"It's just a f---ing book," he says.

"Who cares? It's your beliefs that matter. Quite frankly, if you are going to get upset about a book, you're taking life way too seriously."
But the QUT, which employs Mr Stewart, is not impressed. Vice-chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said that the university does not support the destruction of religious artefacts.

"The university is obviously extremely, extremely unhappy and disappointed that this sort of incident should occur," Professor Coaldrake said in Sydney today. "It may have occurred in the individual's private time or on a weekend - it doesn't matter. There is always in the community collateral damage to these sorts of things." Prof. Coaldrake said Mr Stewart met university management today and has since decided to go on leave for an unspecified period.

Mr Stewart had not been sacked, Prof. Coaldrake said after the Sydney news conference, but the university would review the matter in accordance with its code of conduct.

Mr Stewart, an assistant organiser with a group called Brisbane Atheists, was not at his Brisbane home today but in an earlier message on the group's website he said he expected to be sacked.
"I'm screwed. I think I will lose my job over this. Damn it," he wrote.

Yesterday, the president of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Ikebal Patel, slammed the video.
"I think it's highly offensive that he has done this to two of the holiest books in the world," Mr Patel said. "It does not in any way add any value to trying to promote world peace and the consideration of different views - especially when there are heightened tensions around the anniversary of September 11 and the Eid el Fitr (end of Ramadan) celebrations."
However, the president of the Islamic Association of Australia, Sheik Muhammad Wahid, said while Mr Stewart's motives were deeply hurtful to Muslims, his future was for the university to decide.
"We condemn it and our feelings have been hurt by this man," said Sheik Muhammad Wahid. "There is no need for this kind of thing, just to create disunity and disharmony among people living in Australia."
He urged Muslims to turn the other cheek.
”I urge my fellow Muslims to abide by the laws of this country and not take any action which breaks the law," he said. "These types of actions should be condemned by the wider community. He must be asked what was his agenda, what was his purpose? Maybe he was not of sound mind at the time."
Queensland police said they were not investigating the matter.

In the video clip, Mr Stewart says the Bible and the Koran are "just books". He refers to the furore sparked in the United States by a controversial pastor, who had threatened to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
"With respect to books like the Bible and the Koran, whatever, just get over it," he says. "That said, I don't think it's completely appropriate unless it's done for a good purpose, which I've done today."
He gave the Bible a seven out of 10 for its burning qualities, and said it was better than the Koran which left him feeling sick.
As he smokes part of a page from the Koran, he ponders: "I wonder what Mohammed would have thought about this. Is this profanity, is it blasphemy? Does it really matter?"

Mr Stewart has told The Courier-Mail the video was a joke and he does not do drugs. The green substance featured in the video was actually grass clippings, he said.
He defended the stunt, saying basic freedoms, such as freedom of speech, should not be threatened simply because someone might be offended.
Comment was being sought from the Catholic church.
